BBC Proms in the Park

Client: Middlesbrough Council
Type: Outdoor Concert

To produce a world class music event, both technically and aesthetically, to showcase the newly developed Centre Square, Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley region to a worldwide audience.

The BBC Proms is widely regarded as the Worlds Greatest Classical Music Event. For over ten years the BBC has brought the magic of the Last Night of the Proms to over 100 million worldwide.

The satellite ‘Proms in the Park’ events take place in five separate outdoor locations throughout the UK feeding live footage back to London, undoubtedly making the overall production the BBC’s most technically complex. Middlesbrough Council appointed Alan Hillary Events to project manage this major event for the Tees Valley region. The role of the AHE team was to coordinate all aspects of the event including production management, audience management and marketing.

First class production management is essential to the success of the broadcast which involved understanding and communicating complex technical information to a wide range of event contributors, reporting to and managing a Safety Advisory Group, implementing road closures and liaising with all key stakeholders, as well as contracting all technical requirements including the stage, PA system, lighting and power sources to mention just a few.

This was the third BBC Proms in the Park event managed by AHE including the first ever BBC Proms broadcast from the north east of England which was held on Baltic Square, Gateshead.

The event in Middlesbrough was an immense success providing another memorable occasion for the region and worldwide exposure for the Tees Valley area.

The success of the event was acknowledged when it won the title “Best Event Tees Valley” at the Journal Culture Awards 2007.
